Review by Dr. Ganesh Ramachandran ( Head of Department and Senior Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology )Taylor’s University Malaysia

The practice of medicine is art that is grounded in science, one area where this is particularly true is in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology.

While we have made major strides in the care of women, this has also resulted in a myriad of therapeutic choices.

This can sometimes complicate decision making for even the most experienced doctor and can be a source of anxiety and doubt for a patient with access to information available online with a click of button.

While there are many books that address controversies for a senior practitioner, this is to my knowledge the first one that has been written with an undergraduate in mind.

It covers common areas of obstetrics and gynecology where are practitioner often is called upon to make decisions and provides the basis on which these decisions are made.

While the editors modestly say their target audience is the undergraduate this would be a useful book for the all grades of staff who need to speak to and counsel patients on their therapeutic options in obstetrics and gynecology.

It is important to recognize that this book is not a textbook of obstetrics and gynecology but rather a book that dips into ever so often to organize ones thoughts before counseling a patient or in the case of students and trainees before an exam.

The long list of references at the end of the book is also commendable and will be useful for those who want to read around the topics.

I have had to think hard about criticisms of the book, if any it is that in some chapters

the construct of language is rather abrupt and there is a rapid fire of information to digest in each paragraph. I also wish a chapter on ethical issues and conflicts was included, to sensitize young doctors on the difficulties of making decisions, it is as become senior practitioners that we realize that many things are never black or white, just different shades of grey.

In conclusion I congratulate the editors for putting together a diverse team of doctors and producing a book that will provide a basis for decision making in obstetrics and gynecology for students, primary care physicians and obstetricians and gynecologists.

I did my O & G studies & posting in medical school many decades ago! However I found the book very concise and presented the main points very clearly & easy to read & understand. I am sure medical students & doctors should find it useful.
I enjoyed the quotations at the beginning of each chapter!

I had the pleasure to look through your book Critical thinking in Obstetrics & Gynecology . I was amazed at the novel means of communicating vital and essential facts of common OBGYN problems. The presentation and adherence to short messages are indeed a welcome change from conventional approaches adopted in books. I am indeed happy to see difficult subjects having been handled with such brevity.

By. Dr. Somsubhra De, Professor Obstetrics and Gynecology. Manipal University College. Malaysia

The book titled Critical Thinking in Obstetrics & Gynecology has been an aptly named book. The various authors have shared their collective expertise in writing this book. The chapters chosen are mainly common topics in obstetrics & gynecological practice with addition of not so common complications to further enrich the book. The chapters focused on the practical and functional aspects of the topics discussed.

I personally liked how the authors discussed the various aspects in a topic based on “For & against or Pros & Cons or Advantages & Disadvantages”. This reflects not only the knowledge but also the experience of the authorship of the book. The chapter on Cesarean section is exemplary of this format and reflects the purity of critical thinking.

However, some chapters are written in simple informational format and not the debate format as other chapters but those are mainly for not so common topics or uncommon complications for which the reader needs to acquire basic knowledge in the first place.

This book will definitely help the final years of the medical undergraduates, house officers and aspiring gynecologists.
